Highlights of the Dauphin Friendship Centre Youth Program

The Dauphin Youth Program / Centre opened its doors September 5, 2000 with almost unbelievable results. The youth participated in this program range from 12 to 24 years of age. Our program averages 56 children with numbers reaching as high as 84 on a few evenings/weekends.

The youth participate in planned activities and workshops. Two staff members and numerous volunteers assist in the supervision of the program.

The Painted Sky Youth Council is instrumental in the over operation of the Youth Program. The council meets to plan activities, give suggestions and assist in with development of all programs at the Youth Centre.

The Dauphin Friendship Centre Youth Program Programs and Activity:

Sports and Recreation

  • We provide youth with the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to become active in a variety of sports and recreational activities through training, hands on experience and equipment provision.
  • Youth plan and organize sporting and recreational activities through the Youth Centre (Camping, fishing trips, hiking, etc.)
  • Youth be supported and encouraged to participate in community activities, equipment will be provided, transportation, training and help in securing financial assistance.
  • Courses are offered in baseball basketball, volleyball, snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding, fishing and kayaking/canoeing.
  • Coaching / Ref and sporting technique courses are offered for youth in the community.

Culture and Language

  • With the assistance of the Youth Cultural Worker youth develops and implements activities relating to the Aboriginal Culture.
  • Youth take an active role in the planning of the Dauphin Friendship Centre Aboriginal Centre Aboriginal Festival working closely with the Youth Coordinator to plan activities and entertainment for youth between the ages of 15 and 24.
  • Youth are encouraged and assisted in the continual program development of their Square Dancing, Pow Wow and Drum Group.
  • Youth work closely with Elders to learn about the Aboriginal Culture, participate in Sweats, Sharing Circles, story telling and learning about the different Ceremonies and practices of the Metis, First Nation and Inuit people.
  • Elder for weekly visits to the Youth Centre.
  • Field trips for youth to attend cultural activities (Pow Wows, Historical Sites, Blueberry picking, picking of traditional medicines).

Employment, Education and Training

  • Through continual formation of partnerships youth are assisted in their education, employment and training endeavors.
  • Courses are offered in Computer Training, Driverâs Education, First Aid, Resume Development, Job Readiness and Interview Skills as well as in things such as Leadership Training, Mentor Training.
  • The continued operation of the alternative school program out of the Youth Centre (partnership has been formed)
  • Life Skills Training.
  • Work with youth and employers to help find work experiences, training and employment opportunities.
  • Tours to educational facilities (Universities, Colleges, Training Institutes) Factories, Health Care Centre, APTN, and the RCMP will be set up to assist youth in making career choices.

Social and Health

  • Assure a safe environment for youth to interact and learn
  • Assist the Youth Council in developing workshops that address issues of Health and Self
  • Workshops for Female Youth (covering areas of health and relationships)
  • Workshops designed for Male Youth (covering health, relationships)
  • Encourage a healthy lifestyle
  • Addictions Awareness Training and Prevention
  • Provide positive role models
  • Classes in healthy cooking and safe food handling
  • Partner with Mental Health for Counselor to work closer with youth program.
  • Field trips to Winnipeg to see the many sights offered in a city of that size as well as trips to other communities and youth groups to learn and share experiences.

We also have a Square Dancing Program with several youth enrolled in weekly classes. This program teaches youth the principle of square dancing and offers them a chance to show their talent.

We have a Pow Wow Dance Group with 30 registered youth. This program facilities the learning of traditional Aboriginal Dance.

Dauphin Friendship Centre Youth Drum Group teaches youth the skills necessary to sing and drum traditional Aboriginal music.

The Youth Centre also offers a place for the youth to mingle with friends, use the computers, play air hockey, play guitars, cook, play pool and enjoy all types of activities. A monthly calendar is also produced to inform the youth of activities and events planned.
