Aboriginal Festival
The Dauphin Friendship Centre's Annual Aboriginal Festival has proven to be an outstanding success; with usually 2,000 people attending the weekend event it showcases Aboriginal Talent and Entrepreneurship at its best.
Over 30 contestants have entertained in the Talent Show Competition on Saturday evening. Young and old performed with a caliber that was no less than professional.
The Pow Wow is also an incredible event. Well over 146 dancers in regalia assist in making the Grand Entry of the Pow Wow held on the Saturday afternoon spectacular. Usually a dozen drum groups take turns showing their skills at singing and drumming while providing an opportunity for dancers to show off their skills.
One of the many highlights of the Pow Wow was watching the skill of dancers that competed in the 6 Special Dance Categories Men's Traditional, Men's Fancy Feather, Men's Grass, Woman's Traditional, Woman's Traditional, Woman's Fancy Shawl and Woman's Jingle.
The host committee is honoured that Princesses and Junior Warriors are able to participate in the event. Dancers and drum groups performed until the sun had set and darkness was falling.
Square Dance Competition
Toes tapping, hands clapping and fiddles singing Sunday usually wraps up the weekend with a Square Dancing Competition. Groups from as far away as North Dakota, USA performed and competed for prize moneys in three separate categories; Juniors, Adults and Seniors.
Children's Activities
Two days of Children's Activities proved to be a big hit with all the kids taking part in face painting, arts, crafts and activity stations that were setup on the festival grounds.
Canteen/Crafts/Food Vendors
Entrepreneurs, business and organizations from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta setup displays of programs and crafts. We will take only craft vendors for those that sell aboriginal handicrafts and products. This provides an opportunity for festival goers to purchase some of their unique merchandise.
A variety of Food Vendors are invited to be on site to provide festival goers with good meals and snacks at reasonable prices. There was also an opportunity to experience food with an Aboriginal flavour, bannock baked burgers. Many local businesses assisted the Festival by purchasing event advertising, donating services or becoming a sponsor of the event. Without the assistance of many of these groups this event would be the success it was.
